Summer Fun, Lifesaving Readiness: Learn CPR and First Aid
From beach days and backyard BBQs to youth camps and summer tournaments, our communities are in full swing this season. But while summer brings sunshine and celebration, it also brings higher risks—from heat-related illness and water emergencies to sudden cardiac arrest during strenuous activity.
When the unexpected happens, being prepared to act can mean the difference between life and death. Whether it’s performing CPR, stopping a bleed, or recognizing the signs of heat stroke, knowing basic lifesaving skills empowers you to help in those critical first moments before EMS arrives.
Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere—even during a swim meet, a hike, or a pickup game at the park. Survival depends on someone nearby recognizing the emergency, calling 911, starting CPR, and using an AED (automated external defibrillator) if one is available.
That’s why we’re encouraging families, coaches, volunteers, and community members to take a few simple steps to stay prepared this summer.
Here’s how to get started:
- Sign up for a free CPR/AED and First Aid class through the Medic One Foundation (see upcoming dates below!)
- Download the PulsePoint app to receive alerts when someone nearby needs CPR
- Locate the nearest AED at your local pool, field, or event venue
- Talk to your child’s coach or school about emergency readiness as sports gear up again
- Keep a first aid kit in your car, backpack, or sports bag
- Encourage family and friends to get trained—they may be first on the scene
