Medic One Foundation Awards Four EMT Scholarships for Spring 2025
To help address the ongoing shortage of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) in King County and surrounding areas, Medic One Foundation is proud to announce the awarding of four EMT scholarships for the Spring 2025 quarter. These latest awards bring the total number of scholarships awarded this year to 12.
As the need for highly trained EMTs continues to grow, Medic One Foundation remains focused on increasing access to emergency medical services careers—particularly for individuals from underrepresented communities. “There is still a significant demand for EMTs across our region,” says Kim Duncan Martin, Executive Director of Medic One Foundation. “At the same time, the fire service doesn’t yet reflect the diversity we see in our communities. We want to help change that.”
Through a partnership with North Seattle College, the Foundation’s EMT Scholarship Program covers tuition, books, and certification costs for students who might otherwise be unable to pursue this critical training.
One of this spring’s scholarship recipients, Mikey, brings a deep sense of purpose to EMT work. A longtime volunteer with the International District Emergency Center (IDEC), Mikey is inspired by the legacy of Donnie Chin and the center’s five-decade history of serving Seattle’s Chinatown-International District. “I am deeply honored to accept this scholarship offer for NSC’s EMT program this coming spring,” Mikey shared. “I’m incredibly grateful for the support and will do my best to make the most of this opportunity.”
Mikey’s motivation stems from their experience supporting a grandparent through medical challenges and witnessing the effects of language and cultural barriers in healthcare. As someone with strong community ties and a passion for service, Mikey hopes to provide culturally responsive, hands-on care where it’s needed most—especially in underserved neighborhoods like the CID. Mikey also plans to continue volunteering with IDEC after certification and help train future volunteers in emergency response.
This quarter’s scholarships were made possible in part by a generous grant from PNC Bank, which funded one of the four awards. “We’re incredibly grateful to PNC Bank for their ongoing commitment to building a stronger EMS workforce,” says Kim. “Since 2021, support from partners like PNC has allowed us to award 44 scholarships and counting.”
Medic One Foundation remains committed to fostering a skilled and diverse pipeline of EMTs equipped to meet the evolving needs of our communities—now and into the future.
