Save the Date: CPR & AED Awareness Week | June 1-7

Be Ready. Be Trained. Save a Life.

Each year, more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of hospitals in the U.S., and nearly 70% of them happen at home. That means the life you save could be someone you love. Yet fewer than half of these victims receive CPR from a bystander.

June 1–7 marks National CPR and AED Awareness Week, and there’s no better time to take action. Learning CPR and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is quick, easy, and lifesaving.

Why Every Second Counts

In a cardiac emergency, every minute without CPR and defibrillation decreases the chance of survival by 10%. But when bystanders act quickly, survival rates can double or even triple.

That’s why bystander CPR is one of the most critical links in the chain of survival—and why we’re proud to say our community is leading the way.

Thanks to a deeply integrated Medic One/EMS system, highly trained paramedics, and decades of public education efforts, Seattle and King County are among the best places in the world to survive a cardiac arrest.

  • 51% survival rate for witnessed, shockable cardiac arrests—more than double the national average.
  • Over 70% of cardiac arrests in King County receive bystander CPR, compared to the national average of around 40%.

These numbers reflect the extraordinary impact that trained bystanders can have. The more people who know CPR and how to use an AED, the more lives we can save—together.
